Gimnasia La Plata v Colo Colo , Chilean Side Into Semi-Finals

Match Highlights

The stage is set early as Colo Colo nearly scores in the first minute.

Colo Colo is in total control throughout the first half, but are unable to finish.

The second half signals the beginning of the end as Escobar pulls down Matias Fernandez in the box and Humberto Suazo buries the penalty to make it 1 – 0 on the night, 5 – 1 aggregate.

Suazo cuts through the Gimnasia defense all night, but the Chileans are unable to kill the game off, even missing a penalty in the 68th.

The Gimnasia strategy to stop the Colo Colo scoring machine seems to be elbows to the head and studs-up challenges. There is even a headbutt from Silva as the home side sees yellow all night. In the 71st, a kick to the shin of Alvaro Ormeno from Sebastian Dubarbier gets a well-deserved red and Gimnasia are down to 10.

In the 79th, the entire tie is summed up in one play, as Gustavo Semino slips in his own half. Fernandez picks up the gift and fires across to Gonzalo Fierro, who cracks a low drive into the far corner to make it 2 – 0, 6 – 1.

The last ten minutes are only saved by the spirited Gimnasia supporters who sing strongly, even in defeat. After the violence last week in Santiago, the pitch is surrounded by police, but it appears that the match is played without incident.

Any team with aspirations of hoisting the trophy at tournament’s end will need to figure out a way to stop Colo Colo’s incredible goal-scoring onslaught.

57′ – Chelsea – Michael Ballack
69′ – Portsmouth – Benjamin Mwaruwari

Within minutes of each other, Shevchenko and Ballack both finally score for Chelsea. Portsmouth is surprisingly resilient and they pull one back with 21 minutes to play. In a strange footnote, believing the ball was going out of play, Jose Mourinho leaps from the bench and plays a live ball to Michael Essien in the 61st. Mourinho quickly apologizes to referee Clattenburg.

Deportivo La Coruna 1 – 0 Atletico Madrid
66′ Deportivo – Javier Arizmendi

Sunday 22 October 2006

Manchester United 2 – 0 Liverpool
Total domination as Rafael Benitez’ side falls 11 points off the pace of Man U and Chelsea. Paul Scholes scores in his 500th appearance for the Red Devils. Rio Ferdinand scores a nice goal after controlling a deflected pass from Ryan Giggs, who is in fine form.

Blackburn 0 – 1 Bolton
Ivan Campo’s goal stands up as goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen saves two penalties in the last five minutes to preserve the win.

Reading 0 – 4 Arsenal
Thierry Henry scores in the first minute as the Gunners roll over Reading. Alexander Hleb scores on a nice give and go with Tomas Rosicky, and then assists Robin Van Persie for another after the break. Henry adds a penalty to finish off the rout. Arsenal are only five back with a game in hand.

Tottenham 1 – 0 West Ham
Mido fires a lovely strike from a sharp angle to give Spurs the win. Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe will be investigated for a “comical” bite on the arm of West Ham’s Javier Mascherano.

Real Madrid 2 – 0 Barcelona
Raul heads home brilliantly from a lovely Sergio Ramos cross. Ruud Van Nistelrooy has no less than five shots on goal, hitting the bar once, and volleying home tremendously for Real’s second. Lionel Messi is Barcelona’s one bright spot as he beats Roberto Carlos time and again. Barcelona finishes a rough week, made to look ordinary by a rejuvenated Real Madrid, and being humbled by Chelsea in midweek.

Colo Colo 4 – 1 Gimnasia La Plata, Match Suspended in 86th

October 20, 2006

copa-sudamericana-logo.jpg

Colo Colo (Chile) 4 – 1 Gimnasia La Plata (Argentina) Suspended

A great night of football ended abruptly as fans of Colo Colo hurled what looked to be chunks of cement at Gimnasia players, causing the match to be suspended in the 86th minute.

Before the stoppage, Colo Colo’s amazing goal-scoring run through the Copa Sudamericana continued as they took the game to Gimnasia. As dominating as the scoreline appeared, it could have been much worse as the Chilean-side were in control from the start.

The first half saw Colo Colo jump on top when Alexis Sanchez earned a penalty, only to have the Argentine-side draw even when Matias Escobar volleyed beautifully against the run of play.

The 1 – 1 halftime score was deceiving as the traffic was one way with Gimnasia pinned back for most of the first 45.

Gimnasia will justifiably feel hard done as Colo Colo’s Humberto Suazo broke the deadlock on a play that was inarguably offside.

Nonetheless, Gimnasia struggled to create scoring chances while Sanchez and Suazo continually broke through the Gimnasia back line.

Suazo scored his second in the 66th with a tremendous strike just outside the penalty area.

Two minutes later, it Suazo again, with an absolutely thrilling weave through the Gimnasia defense, but his open shot at goal went agonizingly wide.

But not to be denied the hattrick, Suazo finished the game off in the 76th when he broke behind the defense and slotted just under the keeper for the 4 – 1 Colo Colo lead.

The suspension was an unfortunate finish as Gimnasia’s Nicolas Cabrera was stretchered off holding his neck, although he appeared to be alright.

The barrage of debris seemed to end when Colo Colo players ran toward the stands, pleading with fans to stop.

CONMEBOL will rule on the suspension.
