Copa Libertadores, Mexican Teams Play for Two Spots in January

November 8, 2006

InterLiga, featuring eight teams, will be played January 3rd through 13th to determine which two teams will represent Mexico in the Copa Libertadores 2007.

Unfortunately, Copa Sudamericana semifinalists, Toluca, because of their Clausura championship, are required to play in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, preventing them from possibly playing in the Libertadores.

The winner of the current Apertura will be in the same position as Toluca, unable to join in the South American showcase event.

Boca Juniors v Racing Club, Rescheduled Match Ends in Draw

November 3, 2006

boca-juniors-soccer-ball.jpgThe postponed match between Boca Juniors and Racing Club ended in a 0 – 0 draw on Wednesday.

The match was originally scheduled for 22nd October, but was not played when lawsuits were threatened when Racing Club attempted to block an alledged “barrabrava” Boca fan from attending the match.

The draw was enough to put Boca into first with a half game in hand, a suspended match with Gimnasia in which Boca trails 1 – 0 at the half.

Argentina Officials Look to Stop Violence

November 3, 2006

argentina-football-association.jpgOfficials are searching for ways to stop the violence that plagues Argentina football.

The “barrabravas”, slang for violent fans, were even the source of a cancellation of Racing Club v Boca Juniors just a few weeks ago. Racing Club attempted to block a notorious Boca barrabrava from attending the match and the subsequent threatened lawsuits caused the match to be postponed.

Clashes with riot police are not uncommon at Argentine football matches.
