Gonzalo Higuain, River Plate Teenager Called Up By France

November 9, 2006

River Plate’s Gonzalo Higuain has been called up by France manager Ray Domenech to play in next week’s friendly against Greece.

Higuain is French-Argentinian and has stated his desire to play for France even though he does not speak French.

The 18 year-old sensation was born in France while his father was playing football in Ligue 1.

Most recently, Higuain impressed in the Superclasico against Boca Juniors scoring twice in the 3 – 1 River win.

Michel Platini, UEFA Candidate Would Like Changes

October 21, 2006

euro-2008-mascots.jpgIf Michel Platini does become the new UEFA president, he has made it clear that he would like to see certain changes, notably, no more than three Champions League spots per league.

Under the current format, England, Spain and Italy all have four and would lose one spot.

Platini noted his opposition to refereeing by video replay and his support of adding two more line-judges per match.

Goal Videos on YouTube Being Stopped

October 21, 2006

Football videos featured on YouTube, and subsequently on sites like SoccerGolazo, 101greatgoals, and others, are being stopped.

A firm that represents the English FA, UEFA, and SPL, have contacted the website 101greatgoals with an order to stop linking to the YouTube content.

YouTube has also been contacted and thousands of videos are now being purged.

YouTube was recently bought by Google and its users watch about 100 million clips per day.

England Manager Steve McClaren Already Stumping to Keep Job

October 17, 2006

england-soccer-ball.gifEven though Steve McClaren has fired his publicist, the England manager is still making sure the spin is going in the proper direction.

He has made clear the reasons he should not be sacked by stating, “I should be judged at the end of that period (Euro 08).”

He even went as far as setting everyone straight about the reasonable timeframe in which observers can discuss his firing, saying, “I’m not contemplating resigning and it’s too early to talk about the sack.”

Assistant coach Terry Venables backed his much maligned boss, but he unwittingly admitted failure when he stated, “It used to be that an England manager had 12 months to make his mark, but if it’s down to eight weeks now, then the job has just become impossible.”

McClaren and Publicist Fallout

October 14, 2006

nfl-football-englandAs the England coaching situation gets more humiliating by the day, England manager Steve McClaren and his publicist, Max Clifford, have ended their working relationship.

Just yesterday, Clifford made no mention of animosity between himself and McClaren. The famous publicist may have caused the under-fire England coach embarrassment when he all but said that Beckham’s being dropped was a PR move while hinting a David Beckham recall might be a possibilty.

McClaren has not kept his dislike of Beckham well hidden and is likely to feel undermined by his publicist’s speculation.

McClaren’s undefined trip to observe American football has now been cancelled, but it seems to be unclear whether McClaren or the English Football Association made the decision.

England Manager Steve McClaren Under Fire

October 14, 2006

nfl-football-england.jpgIt may never be known what England manager Steve McClaren was hoping to learn from an American football team, as the FA has cancelled his trip to the U.S.

The FA brain-trust seemingly think combing the Premier League, and possibly the Championship (England’s second division), might be more rewarding.

Adding to McClaren’s woes are the growing numbers calling for the return of un-fancied David Beckham.

The former England captain might do well to distance himself from the sinking ship and wait for the next regime.

England’s next matches are a friendly at the Netherlands on November 15 and at home to Spain on February 7th.

In the unlikely event McClaren clears those two hurdles, he faces a March 24th Euro 08 Qualifying showdown at Israel, who has not lost a competitive match at home in seven years.

England Frustration Growing

October 13, 2006

england-soccer-ball.gifA host of troubles for beleaguered England.

The backlash to Steve McClaren’s new-look squad begins, as the loss to Croatia sinks in.

England could be as low as fourth after the next Euro 08 qualifiers, as they have a game in hand and do not play.

The next five months will be stressful indeed as questions are being asked of the new regime.

Here are some of the highlights:

Keeper Paul Robinson is blamed for the bad turf as a backpass hops his foot for an own-goal.

McClaren hints he will use younger players from the recently successful Under-21s. A move that suggests he doesn’t truly believe his tactics have caused the poor form, as he has stated, but rather it is his players that are to blame.

England Euro 08 Qualifier, UEFA Gives Croatia Warning

October 10, 2006

A number of Croatian supporters formed a human swastika during a friendly with Italy in August and Croatia were fined for racist banners displayed during Euro 2004.

England Should Recall David Beckham – AP Story

October 10, 2006

david-beckham-balls.jpgAccording to an AP story, it is time for Steve McClaren to dispense with pride and recall David Beckham to the England national squad.

The former captain has not be called-up since the World Cup and has said he doesn’t expect to ever be picked for his country again.

England have underachieved in Euro 08 qualifying and their midfield has been plagued with injuries, as well as poor performances, making Beckham’s omission from the team more and more ludicrous.

Steve McClaren’s England Benign Again, No Beckham Recall

October 7, 2006

england-soccer-ball.gifFor the second Euro 08 qualifying match in a row, Steve McClaren’s England were uninspired as they were drawn by Macedonia 0 – 0. The new-look England were unable to steal three points against Macedonia as they had last month.

The capacity crowd at Old Trafford had little to cheer about as the home side hit the post twice, but were unable to produce a winner.

Steve McClaren’s stubborn side seems to have taken hold, as he rebuffed speculation on a David Beckham recall.

When asked by a reporter whether he might recall the former England captain, McClaren replied “Not at the present moment. I haven’t even given it a thought.”

England top Group E on goal difference, even with Israel on seven points.

Katanec stated, “If I was in McClaren’s position, without a shadow of a doubt Beckham would be in the team.”

Macedonia defender Aleksandar Vasoski was also incredulous, saying, “For me he is a hero, a legend. I marked him when we played England in 2003 and it was one of the greatest moments of my life.”

Beckham has not been called-up to play for England since last summer’s World Cup.
