Boca Juniors Crash Out of Copa Sudamericana to Nacional

October 13, 2006

copa-sudamericana-logo.jpgIn dramatic fashion, ten-man Nacional held on gallantly for more than 45 minutes to take Boca Juniors to penalties as the Uruguay side prevailed, making it 3 – 1 from the spot to move into the last eight of the Copa Sudamericana.

Nacional led 2 – 1 going into the night, but Boca dominated from the outset. The Argentine giants seemed in total control until the 15th minute when some poor defending left Diego Perrone alone in the box and the striker took full advantage, knocking home for a 3 – 1 aggregate lead.

Juan Krupoviesa looked to put Boca even on the night, but was saved brilliantly by Nacional keeper Alexis Viera who frustrated the home side time and again.

Just when it seemed it would not be Boca’s night, Nacional were down to ten when Diego Godin was sent off for violently kicking the leg of Nicolas Bertolo while challenging for a 50 – 50 ball.

But just a few minutes later, it was Viera again, saving magnificently from Neri Cardozo as the half ended.

After the break, Boca pressed forward and might have scored in the 53rd when Rodrigo Palacio was unable to knock home a chip over the Nacional defense.

But the breakthrough finally came just minutes later, when Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s corner ricocheted through the box. Viera parried the deflection to the back post where a charging Palacio tapped home and the aggregate gap was down to one.

For the visitors, the next thirty minutes would be harrowing as Boca did everything but score.

In the 81st, Viera saved Nacional yet again when Hugo Ibarra’s fantastic chip from 25 yards was palmed over the bar. And in the 84th, he denied Palacio from point-blank range.

The ensuing corner provided a cruel twist of fate as Viera fumbled the routine cross. The bouncing ball landed at the feet of Bertolo who tapped home to make it 2 – 1 on the night, 3 – 3 on aggregate.

But fate was not unkind to Viera for long. In the 4th and final minute of added-time, the overworked keeper made the save of the night when Juan Krupoviesa fired a rocket from just outside the area which Viera spectacularly palmed over the bar.

On a night that belonged to a goal-keeper, penalties were a fitting finish.

And the “Player of the Match” stopped the second spot kick by Krupoviesa and the fourth from Fernando Gago.

That left Diego Arismendi with a chance to win it on Nacional’s fourth. And when he promptly fired home, the Uruguay side were jubilant.

Boca will surely rue missed opportunies as Nacional deservedly move on to the last eight.
