Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United Star Reveals Racism

September 20, 2006

manchester-united-soccer-ball.gifRio Ferdinand has revealed that during his time at West Ham, a teammate suffered serious racist abuse from a “very well-known opponent.”

In the latest football book to be serialized in The Times, “Rio, My Story” tells how the England international witnessed first-hand racism, but does not go as far as revealing the player involved.

The Manchester United defender cited legal considerations as his reason for not naming the offender.

Intriguingly, Ferdinand wrote, “If I name the player who came out with the most racist abuse I’ve ever heard on a football field, no one would believe it. I guarantee you’d be astonished.”
