Boca Juniors Win Recopa 4 – 3 Over Sao Paulo

September 15, 2006

recopa-sudamericana.jpgThursday night, Boca Juniors became the only team to claim the Recopa Visa Sudamericana three times. A scintillating 2 – 2 draw with Sao Paulo in Brazil was enough to give the Argentina side a 4 – 3 aggregate win.

Martin Palermo could have easily put Boca up on 7 minutes. When a backpass went astray, El Loco found the ball at his feet with no one in the net, but his first touch failed him and the ball rolled excruciatingly out of reach.

The pace was furious and 8 minutes later Sao Paulo’s Souza had an opportunity inside the penalty area, but misfired and his shot went harmlessly wide.

Boca were quick out of the back and Rodrigo Palacio was behind the Sao Paulo defense on 18 minutes off a midfield flick-on but fired into the side netting.

The Brazilian side almost broke-through when Fabao brilliantly backheeled a free kick from Souza, but the ball shot just inches wide with the keeper rooted to the spot.

Sao Paulo began asserting themselves after the near-miss and the breakthrough finally came on 34 minutes. Junior ran under a beautiful chip from Souza, controlled with one touch, and tucked the ball just under keeper Also Bobadilla.

Just four minutes later, Boca should have equalized when Palacio beat the Sao Paulo defense to the touchline and squared for Neri Cardozo. But the 20 year-old’s blistering shot was stopped from point-blank range.

After yet another near-miss, Boca finally got the leveler on 40 minutes when Palermo’s header picked out Palacio who headed home.

The riot police clashed with Boca fans to start the second half, and on the pitch, Palacio found himself behind the defense within seconds but was unable to take advantage.

In the 50th, Sao Paulo were almost level on aggregate, but with the back post open, Thiago’s shot hit the side netting as the hosts began pressing forward.

But the equalizer would never come, and on 75 minutes Boca all but hoisted the trophy. A stunning run of passes saw the ball end up on the foot of Palermo, who brilliantly weaved in and out of the Sao Paulo defense and fired home.

An own goal in the dying minutes from Boca defender Claudio Rodriguez would not be enough to change the outcome and Boca and their fans were able to celebrate their third Recopa title.
