Inter Milan Champions of Italy Again?

September 9, 2006

inter-milan-soccer-ball.gifEsteban Cambiasso scored two stunning goals and Zlatan Ibrahimovic added another as Inter jumped out to a three goal lead and held on for a thrilling 3 – 2 win at Fiorentina.

The newly crowned champions, due to last year’s scandal, were dangerous on the counter as the hosts were unable to capitalize on long spells of pressure.

World Cup winner Luca Toni, looking for his spot back on the international squad, was stopped off a brilliant bicycle kick that looked to put Fiorentina back in the match after falling behind 3 – 0.

Even though they were trailing, the Viola had begun to dominate, and on 68 minutes Inter’s defense was finally broken as Toni headed home from point blank range.

Eleven minutes later, Toni would put the home side within striking distance with an absolutely brilliant header that made it 3 – 2 and set the stage for a furious finish.

Inter, having subbed-off Patrick Viera, was pinned back the remainder of the way, but Fiorentina was unable to find the equalizer that would allow them to steal a point.

Cambiasso had opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a lovely strike off some brilliant passing from the new Nerazzurri front line of Hernan Crespo and Ibrahimovic.

The Argentine international’s second goal was equally brilliant, but it was his lifted pass over the Fiorentina defense to a charging Ibrahimovic that was the highlight of a spectacular night of football.

Inter look to be the team to beat in Serie A, and even though Fiorentina played brilliantly, the 19-point penalty imposed for this season will be too much to overcome. They’ll do well to make the Champions League.
