Claude Makele Forced to Play

September 5, 2006

france-soccer-ball.gifWhen I first heard about this story, I assumed I misunderstood. Surely a player can retire from international football when he wants.

Not so! Or so says France manager Raymond Domenech.

Domenech apparently does not accept Makele’s retirement announcement that followed the World Cup. After calling him up for this week’s Euro 08 qualifiers, the French coach states in reference to the selection process, “that will depend on my goodwill and my goodwill only.”

Well pardon us while we play the grand piano.

Not surprisingly, this has riled Chelsea management as the club has come to the defense of its player.

Adding to the strangeness of this story, French captain Patrick Viera states of Makele, “his position is difficult, but I believe, deep down, he wants to continue.”

If that is true, why all the threats of suspension, etc?

And if a player can be made to play, why no call-up for Zizou?!

How much more fun would tomorrow’s World Cup Final rematch be if Zidane were featuring for Les Bleus?

Too much to wish for, I guess.
