David Beckham Not Yet Signed

November 8, 2006

david-beckham-balls.jpgAs expected, David Beckham is now hesitant to sign a new contract at Real Madrid.

After weeks of Real president Ramon Caulderon saying the deal would be done shortly, it now appears that a deal is not imminent after all.

Beckham has struggled for playing time as Madrid have played well with new winger Jose Antonio Reyes.

Reyes has added some much-needed speed to the Bernabeu outfit, as has Robinho.

The United States league MLS has shown interest in the former England captain, as have several English Premier League teams, most recently being Tottenham.

Of Lennon, who has been linked to the Blues in recent speculation, Mourinho said, “I am completely not interested.”

Arsene Wenger, Arsenal Manager Against Quotas

November 3, 2006

A new plan being supported by FIFA would force club teams to have at least six players eligible to play for the club’s national association.

The Gunners’ boss amusingly argued, “What can you say to a guy who pays money to watch your team? ‘This player’s first touch is not good, yes, we know, but he is English. What can I do?’”

Boca Juniors v Racing Club, Rescheduled Match Ends in Draw

November 3, 2006

boca-juniors-soccer-ball.jpgThe postponed match between Boca Juniors and Racing Club ended in a 0 – 0 draw on Wednesday.

The match was originally scheduled for 22nd October, but was not played when lawsuits were threatened when Racing Club attempted to block an alledged “barrabrava” Boca fan from attending the match.

The draw was enough to put Boca into first with a half game in hand, a suspended match with Gimnasia in which Boca trails 1 – 0 at the half.

Toluca Defeats San Lorenzo for Last Semifinal Spot

November 2, 2006

copa-sudamericana-logo.jpgToluca dramatically defeated San Lorenzo 2 – 0 on the night, 3 – 3 aggregate, to go through to the Copa Sudamericana Semifinals.

The away goal from last Wednesday’s match was all-important as San Lorenzo, who played so well last week, looked lethargic.

The match started well for the Argentine side as they came close twice in the first two minutes. But it would be nearly an hour of play before they would come close again as Toluca pressed forward looking for goals.

And the Mexican side wouldn’t take long to go up. In the 5th minute, goalkeeper Agustin Orion fumbled a hard drive by Bruno Marioni and Carlos Morales pounced on the loose ball and fired a rocket into the back of the net for the 1 – 0 lead.

As benign as San Lorenzo was offensively, their defense was strong and manager Oscar Ruggeri had to like his chances of making the Semifinals when his team were down only 1 – 0 at the half.

The break seemed to awaken the San Lorenzo offense and in the 50th, it looked as though they might book their place in the final four.

When Osmar Ferreyra couldn’t find any help at the top of the box, he wheeled 180 degrees back across the middle, left three defenders behind, and rifled a left-footed strike off the post.

But that was as close as the Argentine side would come to scoring.

Toluca took charge and began pressing forward, but the winner would not come.

And then, in an odd series of events in the 68th, San Lorenzo defender Jonathan Bottinelli fouled Sinha 30 yards from goal. Before Sinha could get up, Diego Rivero charged in kicking at the ball, still underneath Sinha.

The Toluca midfielder foolishly lashed out. When he kicked Rivero’s legs, he was shown a straight red, leaving the Mexican side down a man, still needing a goal.

In an ironic twist of fate, Vicente Sanchez stepped up for the free kick earned by Sinha and sent a brilliant cross into the box. Paulo Da Silva headed over keeper Orion and the home crowd erupted as Toluca was now just 21 minutes from the last four.

San Lorenzo went down to ten men as well just four minutes later. The open space and San Lorenzo’s desperation set up a thrilling finish as the action went end to end.

In the final five minutes it got nervy for the home side as they put all ten men behind the ball.

But by that time, San Lorenzo looked tired, and even though they kept the Mexican side pinned back, they couldn’t crack the Toluca defense.

After three tense minutes of extra time, Toluca celebrated a date in the Copa Sudamericana Semifinals as they join Atletico Paranaense, Pachuca, and their next opponents, Colo Colo.

UEFA Will Investigate Barcelona v Chelsea

November 1, 2006

champions-league.jpgTuesday’s Champions League match between Barcelona and Chelsea is to be investigated by UEFA to decide what fines will be handed out.

The heated match saw ten yellow cards, six of which went to Chelsea. By UEFA rules, teams receiving five or more bookings are automatically fined.

Although both teams surrounded Italian referee Stefano Farina on several occasions, the worst incident took place when Ashley Cole was booked.

It appeared that Barcelona believed Cole’s yellow was his second, mistaking Frank Lampard’s earlier booking for Cole’s first yellow.

Other incidents included Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard charging Farina at game’s end and Barcelona fans hurling objects at Chelsea players following the match.

November 1, 2006

inter-milan-soccer-ball.gif
Spartak Moscow 0 – 1 Inter Milan

Tuesday 31.10.06

Match Summary:

A thrilling match in -2 C (28 F) temperatures as a first minute goal by Julio Cruz, from a Zlatan Ibrahimovic cross, holds up to move Inter to second with 6 points.

The Italian side showed signs of brilliance with some lovely passing, but Spartak dominated for long stretches.

A draw or better would have been a fair result for the Russian side as they will certainly rue missed opportunites. Not the least of which being a 78th minute Roman Shishkin strike from 40 yards that rocked the crossbar, dramatically sending chucks of ice raining down onto the goal line.
