Match Highlights
The stage is set early as Colo Colo nearly scores in the first minute.
Colo Colo is in total control throughout the first half, but are unable to finish.
The second half signals the beginning of the end as Escobar pulls down Matias Fernandez in the box and Humberto Suazo buries the penalty to make it 1 – 0 on the night, 5 – 1 aggregate.
Suazo cuts through the Gimnasia defense all night, but the Chileans are unable to kill the game off, even missing a penalty in the 68th.
The Gimnasia strategy to stop the Colo Colo scoring machine seems to be elbows to the head and studs-up challenges. There is even a headbutt from Silva as the home side sees yellow all night. In the 71st, a kick to the shin of Alvaro Ormeno from Sebastian Dubarbier gets a well-deserved red and Gimnasia are down to 10.
In the 79th, the entire tie is summed up in one play, as Gustavo Semino slips in his own half. Fernandez picks up the gift and fires across to Gonzalo Fierro, who cracks a low drive into the far corner to make it 2 – 0, 6 – 1.
The last ten minutes are only saved by the spirited Gimnasia supporters who sing strongly, even in defeat. After the violence last week in Santiago, the pitch is surrounded by police, but it appears that the match is played without incident.
Any team with aspirations of hoisting the trophy at tournament’s end will need to figure out a way to stop Colo Colo’s incredible goal-scoring onslaught.
