October 21, 2006

euro-2008-mascots.jpgIf Michel Platini does become the new UEFA president, he has made it clear that he would like to see certain changes, notably, no more than three Champions League spots per league.

Under the current format, England, Spain and Italy all have four and would lose one spot.

Platini noted his opposition to refereeing by video replay and his support of adding two more line-judges per match.

55′ – Chelsea – Andriy Shevchenko
57′ – Chelsea – Michael Ballack
69′ – Portsmouth – Benjamin Mwaruwari

Within minutes of each other, Shevchenko and Ballack both finally score for Chelsea. Portsmouth is surprisingly resilient and they pull one back with 21 minutes to play. In a strange footnote, believing the ball was going out of play, Jose Mourinho leaps from the bench and plays a live ball to Michael Essien in the 61st. Mourinho quickly apologizes to referee Clattenburg.

Deportivo La Coruna 1 – 0 Atletico Madrid
66′ Deportivo – Javier Arizmendi

Sunday 22 October 2006

Manchester United 2 – 0 Liverpool
Total domination as Rafael Benitez’ side falls 11 points off the pace of Man U and Chelsea. Paul Scholes scores in his 500th appearance for the Red Devils. Rio Ferdinand scores a nice goal after controlling a deflected pass from Ryan Giggs, who is in fine form.

Blackburn 0 – 1 Bolton
Ivan Campo’s goal stands up as goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen saves two penalties in the last five minutes to preserve the win.

Reading 0 – 4 Arsenal
Thierry Henry scores in the first minute as the Gunners roll over Reading. Alexander Hleb scores on a nice give and go with Tomas Rosicky, and then assists Robin Van Persie for another after the break. Henry adds a penalty to finish off the rout. Arsenal are only five back with a game in hand.

Tottenham 1 – 0 West Ham
Mido fires a lovely strike from a sharp angle to give Spurs the win. Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe will be investigated for a “comical” bite on the arm of West Ham’s Javier Mascherano.

Real Madrid 2 – 0 Barcelona
Raul heads home brilliantly from a lovely Sergio Ramos cross. Ruud Van Nistelrooy has no less than five shots on goal, hitting the bar once, and volleying home tremendously for Real’s second. Lionel Messi is Barcelona’s one bright spot as he beats Roberto Carlos time and again. Barcelona finishes a rough week, made to look ordinary by a rejuvenated Real Madrid, and being humbled by Chelsea in midweek.
