Even though Steve McClaren has fired his publicist, the England manager is still making sure the spin is going in the proper direction.
He has made clear the reasons he should not be sacked by stating, “I should be judged at the end of that period (Euro 08).”
He even went as far as setting everyone straight about the reasonable timeframe in which observers can discuss his firing, saying, “I’m not contemplating resigning and it’s too early to talk about the sack.”
Assistant coach Terry Venables backed his much maligned boss, but he unwittingly admitted failure when he stated, “It used to be that an England manager had 12 months to make his mark, but if it’s down to eight weeks now, then the job has just become impossible.”
