Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United Star Quickly Apologizes For Gay Slur

October 4, 2006

manchester-united-soccer-ball.gifDuring a BBC interview on Monday, Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand called the host a derogatory name while the two were joking on-air.

The England international quickly apologized saying, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’m not homophobic.”

This is the second time in less than a week that Man United players have gotten into trouble for anti-gay remarks.

Paul Scholes is alleged to have made a homophobic remark to a referee during last week’s Champions League match with Benfica.

Ironically, Manchester United were one of only two EPL teams to back a Gay Football Supporters’ Network (GFSN) initiative condemning homophobia in football.
