Nacional held off Boca Juniors for a well-deserved 2 – 1 at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.

Marcelo Tejera put the Uruguay side up on 18 and Diego Alonso made it two just three minutes later.

But Boca battled back with a first half, injury-time header by Rodrigo Palacio from a Neri Cardozo free kick.

Boca had numerous chances to draw even but were thwarted by brilliant goalkeeping from Jorge Bava.

Both teams played with ten men after just 31 minutes. Boca’s Martin Palermo was sent off with a second yellow after two rash challenges within minutes.

However, the advantage lasted only three minutes as Agustin Viana saw red for a sloppy two-footed challenge at the feet of Bartolo.

The second leg tie is at La Bombonera, Thursday 12, October.
