Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given is recovering from surgery and is expected to be out for six weeks.
In Sunday’s 2 – 0 win over West Ham, Given collided with West Ham’s Marlon Harewood causing a stomach tear. It appeared that Harewood’s knee caught the keeper square in the mid-section when both challenged for a 50-50 ball.
The Ireland international writhed in pain on the pitch and was taken to hospital after the match when his pain wouldn’t subside.
Given is expected to be in hospital for five days.
