Barcelona Jerseys Promote UNICEF

September 6, 2006

UPDATE 19.09.06 – I am trying to find where these jerseys can be purchased. This page will be updated when I find out. – Chris

The famous Barcelona Jerseys that have never promoted a product on front will soon sport the UNICEF logo and the words “Barcelona, more than a club, a new global hope for vulnerable children.”

Rather than receiving payment, the deal will see Barcelona FC contribute 1.5 million euros to UNICEF humanitarian projects.

The new shirts will be unveiled at Tuesday’s Champions League match with Levski Sofia.

Lilian Thuram Humanitarian

September 6, 2006

france-soccer-ball.gif
I must be psychic.

As I blasted Lilian Thuram for being out of touch with football reality in yesterday’s article, I had the thought, “but I thought there was something I liked about this guy. What if he turns around tomorrow and does something great? I mean, I felt for him when he cried at the World Cup.”

Ah, the travails of writing.

Today, Lilian Thuram and French teammate Patrick Viera invited 200 squatters, mostly illegal immigrants, to the France Italy match. The squatters have been living in a gym since 17 August.

A wonderful gesture indeed, from the French internationals.

To make it even more endearing, the invitations apparently enraged right-wing politicians. But of course.

So today, even though I still disagree with his assessment that France outplayed Italy in the Final, I must say well-done Lilian Thuram. Joga Bonito.

Carlos Tevez Video

September 6, 2006

argentina-soccer-ball.gifI noticed a lot of people are looking for information on Carlitos’ band.

I have not been able to track down much, but below are links to what I did find.

The band Tevez fronts is named Piolavago and also features his brother Diego. It seems the style of music is a form of reggae / dancehall / hip-hop, but don’t quote me on that.

If I ever find performance footage, I’ll be sure to post it.

Here are the links and a little treat from a Carlos Tevez video I did find.

Wikipedia – This is where most of the band info comes from.

Macedonia, I Remember Them

September 6, 2006

england-soccer-ball.gifWhen Macedonia were drawn in England’s group for Euro 08, I remembered the name, but couldn’t place the face.

When I saw the headline “Macedonia gets racism warning,” it all came back to me.

I try to have long-term memory loss in order to keep up my optimistic and positive outlook, but I can’t help but recall how furious I was at the Macedonia supporters’ deafening monkey chants in Skopje back in 2003.

I know there are idiots supporting every team, but the sheer volume of the taunts that night made it seem as though there was little or no opposition to the abuse.

I’m sure that is probably unfair of me.

What is not unfair of me is to expect a much better statement from the Macedonian Football Association. MFA spokesman Zoran Nikolovski said Tuesday, “we appeal to our supporters to behave properly and avoid any unreasonable actions which could harm our position and result in harsh penalties.”

In such a progressive era, a sad statement indeed.

Maybe we missed the part about racism being just dead-wrong. Or the passionate plea to the people of Macedonia to show their greatness and to stand up against racist abuse. Or even a little something that makes it seem like this behavior is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Maybe it was in the statement somewhere, but wasn’t quoted in news reports.

But my guess is, with this kind of passivity, we are in for more of the negative abuse tomorrow. If I recall correctly, every time England possessed the ball, the whistles were deafening as well. Provided the player was some class of white, of course.

Unfortunately, after seeing this headline, I am looking forward to tomorrow’s match much less than I was just a few hours ago.

France Italy Rematch Turns Nasty Already

September 6, 2006

italy-soccer-ball.gifThe war of words preceding the war on the pitch has heated up.

France’s Lilian Thuram was quoted as saying, “we should have won the World Cup, we were much the better team.”

Italy’s Gennaro Gattuso rebutted with “I know we usually complain after losses, but they do it even more. Italy is second to France in that.”

A wonderful sound bite from the fiery Italian midfielder.

Unfortunately for Thuram, he has now lost on and off the pitch to the Italians.

He’ll do well to avoid a third defeat tomorrow.

The old adage, “you learn more from losing than from winning” seems to be lost on the great French defender. His comments being not only unsportsmanlike, but also fairly far removed from reality.france-soccer-ball.gif
